This is Universal! What the Heck Does That Mean?

This culinary mini-game is compatible with a wide range of tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) that use dice for task resolution, including popular systems like 5e, OSR variants, Cairn, Dragonbane, EZD6, Mork Borg, Pirate Borg, and Old-School Essentials.

Step 1: Prepare the Beast (Cleaning/Skinning)

One brave soul steps up to handle the beast. They'll roll the corresponding die (d20 or d6). The referee sets a target number based on the creature's toughness – usually, just avoid rolling a fumble. Success means a clean and ready-to-cook monster!

Critical Failure (Roll of 20 or 1):

A gruesome scene unfolds. The adventurer not only fails to clean the beast but also makes a mess of things. The meat is ruined, unusable for cooking, and the stench attracts unwanted attention from creatures that are close-by.

Regular Failure (Roll Over/Under To-Hit Target) :

The adventurer struggles, but manages to salvage some usable portions of the beast. However, the meat's quality is compromised, potentially affecting the final meal's effects or even causing mild illness if consumed.

Critical Success (Roll of 20, 6, or 1):

The adventurer performs a masterful job, not only cleaning the beast perfectly but also uncovering hidden delicacies or valuable parts that could be used for crafting or trade.

Regular Success (Roll Over/Under To-Hit Target):

The adventurer efficiently prepares the beast, ensuring the meat is clean, usable, and of good quality.

Step 2: The Foraging Quest

Another adventurer sets out to gather spices, mushrooms, or anything that can elevate the flavor and effects of the meal. They roll the corresponding die (d20 or d6). The referee sets a target number based on the dungeon's environment. Dark dungeons might offer mushrooms and roots, while a forest could yield berries.

Remember, skipping this step is possible, but the meal won't be as potent and extra effects will not be given.

Critical Failure (Roll of 20 or 1):

Instead of finding ingredients, the adventurer stumbles upon something dangerous – a poisonous plant, an aggressive creature's nest, or a hidden trap. A perilous encounter ensues.

Regular Failure (Roll Over/Under To-Hit Target):

The adventurer comes up empty-handed. The environment proves harsher than expected, or perhaps their foraging skills are simply not up to par. The meal will be plain and lack any special effects.

Success (Roll of 20, 6, or 1):

The adventurer stumbles upon a rare and potent ingredient – a magical herb, a glowing mushroom, or an exotic fruit. This discovery could add significant bonuses to the final meal, granting enhanced effects or unique abilities.

Regular Success (Roll Over/Under To-Hit Target):

The adventurer successfully gathers a variety of ingredients that complement the meal, adding flavor and nutritional value.

Step 3: Kiss the Cook!

Now it's the cook's time to shine! The referee sets a target number based on the monster's toughness. Excellent preparation means the cook only needs to roll anything that is not a fumble.

Critical Failure (Roll of 20 or 1):

A culinary catastrophe! The meal is not only inedible, but it's also hazardous. Everyone who consumes it suffers immediate and severe consequences – food poisoning, hallucinations, or even worse.

Regular Failure (Roll Over/Under To-Hit Target):

The meal is a disappointment. It's bland, burnt, or undercooked. While not dangerous, it offers no benefits and may even cause slight discomfort or lower morale.

Critical Success (Roll of 20, 6, or 1):

The cook surpasses all expectations, creating a culinary masterpiece. The meal is not only delicious but also imbued with magical properties. It could grant temporary invulnerability, heightened senses, or even the ability to communicate with animals.

Regular Success (Roll Over/Under To-Hit Target):

The cook prepares a hearty and satisfying meal that restores health, boosts morale, and leaves everyone feeling energized and ready for their next adventure.
